Srinagar, Feb 13 (KNO): The Government on Friday said that there is presently no proposal under consideration for up-gradation of Government High School Cherwan to the Higher Secondary level. Replying to an un-Starred A.Q. No. 1275 raised by MLA Mian Mehar Ali regarding the up-gradation of High School Cherwan, the Minister In-charge School Education, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) informed the House that no such proposal is currently with the government. The Minister stated that the School Education Department is presently focusing on creation of required infrastructure and provision of staff in schools, particularly those already upgraded. The Minister said that up-gradation of a High School to Higher Secondary level involves creation of infrastructure, posts of lecturers and non-teaching staff, and carries significant financial implications, requiring concurrence from the Finance Department. The Minister said that the upgradation process also depends on fulfilment of laid down criteria and feasibility norms, including distance from existing Higher Secondary Schools, availability of feeding schools and top-class enrolment. “As per norms, a High School must have a distance of seven kilometres and a minimum enrolment of 35 students in the highest class to qualify for up-gradation to Higher Secondary level,” the Minister said. However, she added that whenever any proposal is received by the School Education Department, the case of the said school shall also be examined in accordance with the norms—(KNO)
